The Church of the Master loves our neighbors by actively supporting local nonprofits in our community. Join us in making a difference!
We serve meals in person at this emergency shelter for Columbus families on the third Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Each time, we serve about 125 people and need 5-6 helpers age 15 and up. You can meet at the church at 4:30 PM to load food and carpool, or directly at the facility from 5:00-8:00 PM.
Four times a year, members of our church, age 5 and up, assist in sorting food donations at WARM, our local food pantry. We check expiration dates, group canned food by type, count them, and box them. If you enjoy gardening, you can also participate in planting and harvesting fresh produce from the WARM garden. Additionally, you can drop off food donations in the bin labeled "WARM" outside the church office doors.
Every last Friday of the month, church members gather at Sunlight Cleaners to meet families referred by WARM. We provide fellowship and help with laundry costs and labor. We need 8-10 helpers each month, age 12 and up, for shifts from 12:00 to 2:00 and 3:30 to 5:30.
Many immigrants are keen to learn English rapidly to secure jobs, communicate with their children's teachers, and pursue citizenship. Every Tuesday and Thursday, from October through May, our church members assist in teaching ESL classes to immigrants at the Northern Lights Library from 10:00 to noon. These classes, an outreach program of the Columbus Literacy Council, require five classroom aides age 18 and up every Tuesday and Thursday.
We assist in building homes at sites in Delaware and Union Counties, performing various tasks such as spreading gravel and vapor barriers, constructing floors, erecting walls, installing roof trusses, windows, doors, vinyl siding, bathroom fixtures, painting interior walls, and landscaping. Volunteers don't need extensive experience but must register on the Habitat website. An introductory session is mandatory. Coordinated carpooling is available on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. Volunteers must be 14 or older. There's an annual Walls Build event in August at The Point at Otterbein where no introductory session is required for new volunteers, and you can help frame interior walls closer to home.
